In this final part of the video, Teresa and I explore the edge of the complex on the other side of Pringle Creek, where the demolition has reached, and see where the facility borders Riverfront Park. Then, we walk back across the rotting railroad trestle and examine some ruins from older construction.

This is part one of a four part "gonzo" video I shot yesterday as we were exploring the old Boise Cascade complex in Salem Oregon. The facility covers a whole city block and actually encloses a major creek! In the past, Boise Cascade was one of the major pollutors of the Willanmette River which runs through Salem. They were eventually forced out of business in this location. The entire complex is currently being demolished, so Teresa and I decided we ought to got document what's left of the place (which dates back a century or more) before it is lost to the historic record. In this first part, we walk down from the parking lot right off Commercial street and enter the underbelly of the building where it straddles Pringle Creek.

From here on out, this blog will contain the best of the best of all my creative and productive endeavors. I had previously limited it just to my artistic efforts in Music, Art, Photography, etc. All the rest of the stuff was posted in a dozen other "topic-specific" blogs I've created. But, that was wearing me too thin. So, I'll be ceasing work on those other blogs and use this as a forum to present all my new material. Sorry if you start seeing things on topics in which you are not interested, but hey, I've only got so much time in a life and I'd rather use it for creating than bookeeping. --map

No, it's not Robert Mackee's book. This is before that. Back in 1990 we started a book on story structure later to become "Dramatica". In the early days we simply called it "Story". The following PDF file (40 meg) contains the first 20 pages from a draft we were working on in November of 1991. Click to download the file: http://storymind.com/dramatica/archive/pdf/10.pdf

Many people have asked how we came up with the Mental Relativity Theory. Well, it didn't happen all at once. In fact, it all began with our attempt to understand the structure of fictional stories. That was a three year full-time effort, 8 hours a day. And the theory we now grew out of quite different concepts those we have now refined. In going through my archives, I just discovered four hours of recordings we made in 1991 to document our very first attempt at a "complete" theory - kind of a unified field theory of story. Here are all four hours of audio in mp3 formt, divided into 8 parts. Enjoy! I've just spent several days converting all my old original compositions to mp3 and uploading them here: Click to Browse, Listen to, or Download Been coming to terms with the past (about time, twenty years after transition). As part of this process, I'm been going through all my creative archives of writings, music, art, movies I directed, and such - before transition. I've done all that stuff after transition too, but never felt comfortable looking at the old material. So, finally, here it is. Most of it is crap, but theres a few good concepts for songs there, which I may now finally get around to finishing and properly recording now. Of course, you can also check out my post-transition musical efforts here .

Returning to Star Wars, we can see the elements at work in each of the eight Archetypes: Name Archetype Internal External Luke Skywalker Protagonist Consider Pursue Empire Antagonist Non-Consideration Prevent Princess Leia Reason Logic Controlled Chewbacca Emotion Feeling Uncontrolled Obi Wan Guardian Conscience Help Darth Vader Contagonist Temptation Hinder Droids Sidekick Faith Support Han Solo Skeptic Disbelief Oppose Beginning with Luke, he has taken it upon himself to Consider Let's get practical for a moment and build some characters using archetypes. Although the names and description of most of these archetypes are no doubt familiar to you, an exact definition of their functions in story structure may not be. In fact, if you ask any group of authors t...

Archetypal Characters in Star Wars Describing archetypes conceptually has its place, but it is much easier to get a feel for them in an actual story. One of the best examples of archetypal characters can be found in the original Star Wars movie, "Episode IV - a New Hope." It should be noted that these arechetypes are NOT maintained in any of the sequals or sequals. In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker is the Protagonist, for he is the one driven by initiative. Although it might appear at first that Darth Vader is the Antagonist, it is actually the Empire itself, in the form of the Gran Mof Tarkin (and all the Storm Troopers) that seeks to maintain the status quo (its own totalitarian hold on the galaxy). The reason Darth seems to be the Antagonist is that he is the first of the "bad guys" we see. He enters with his flowing, black robes, and is clearly the leader of the evil minions. But, this is just the opening teaser of the story. Once the main plot gets going, Dar...
